Here are some do’s and don’ts when buying organic cosmetics advice and expert tips from our guest blogger, Peter Minkoff.

Long gone are the days when we associated organic to food only. With the growing popularity of healthy lifestyle, and the love we’ve started mounting for all things natural, organic has found its way into virtually all products possible – cosmetics included.

Given organic products are (supposedly) based on all natural ingredients, you are probably not far from thinking that all that’s branded organic is safe for your skin, right? Oh well, maybe you should hold off on that one for a second.

The fact organic products are based on natural ingredients doesn’t always mean they are harmless. Or that they are a panacea for your skin. In fact, some organic products may actually hurt your skin.

Why would we doubt the nature behind organic products?

As the organic market has grown lucrative, so has the number of organic imposters. As Telegraph.co.uk observes it, “[…] Imposters are taking advantage of some rather convenient loopholes. Right now there is nothing to stop a hand cream that contains one per cent organic lavender. And 99 per cent something masquerading as organic, claiming its place on the green beauty aisle”.

What is additionally concerning is that organic cosmetics should be derived from natural sources with no synthetic compounds, chemicals, pesticides or irradiation. However, there aren’t really any strict regulations for organic testing. Which is why we cannot be sure whether or not these products were actually made according to the claims about their formulations.

Still, don’t lose faith in your organic products – just find a retailer you trust, read the labels, know the no-nos and you’ll be fine.

Is it true, then, that organic cosmetics have a healing effect on the skin?

Don’t let anyone fool you by promising magic formulas that will turn you into a twenty-something girl at the age of fifty. No cosmetics, organic or other, will un-age your skin, heal your natural grease or dryness, heal your acne or rosacea (or any other skin-care concern). What they may aid with is just nurture what you are already blessed (or cursed) with genetically. And help balance out the skin situation you’ve achieved with a particular nutrition.

So, to answer your question – no, organic cosmetics isn’t necessarily healing your skin but it’s definitely helping it stay healthy and glowing.

Why should I switch to organic cosmetics and makeup?

Although the factor of doubt concerning the origin and claims about organic formulations branded “natural” are to be questioned, these products are still way healthier than any of the chemically mass-produced products you can buy at the nearby perfumeries. With that in mind, here are our favorite reasons to pick organic over anything else:

Reduced chemical treatment

Organic beauty ingredients have not been treated with the same number of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers as the non-organic products have. Even when they have, they were treated with “natural” pesticides (although some synthetic pesticides are still permitted).

The ‘chemical cocktail’ present in the non-organic cosmetics and makeup is harmful for the skin long-term. Unlike organic products, runs the risk of potentially intoxicating your body (the harmful ingredients may get absorbed through the skin, finding their way to your bloodstream).

It’s animal-safe

Given organic products don’t contain chemicals, they consequently don’t require any animal testing prior to their launching. Your organic soap, bubble bath, that fabulous organic eye makeup and the lipstick you’ve recently purchased were never the cause of any animals’ suffering and/or maltreatment.

It’s better for the environment

Organic farming methods are successfully addressing climate-friendly production of food and beauty ingredients. By being less dependent on oil-based fertilizers and pesticides, higher levels of carbon are automatically stored in the soil.

It’s holistic
Organic farmers are very careful about the way they grow their plants and are very respectful of the nature’s processes. Typically, their approach is holistic and it works towards building positive health across the ecology of the farm.
