It’s something that many of us can often struggle with. You can brush twice daily and visit your dentist annually, but is that enough to keep your grin gleaming?

There are actually many ways that you can improve your oral health. Here are a few of the basic steps you can take to make sure your smile stays sparkling.

Firstly, while this may seem obvious, you need to make sure that you brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a good quality fluoride toothpaste. I know, you learned that when you were about four years old, but did you know what even missing one brushing session can lead to a built up of plaque which can stain and damage your teeth.

Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride, as it helps strengthen tooth enamel making it more resistant to decay. Did you know you should change your toothbrush every month or so? As soon as it becomes worn, it will not clean the teeth properly anymore!

Also, many people don’t know what if you do use mouthwash then you shouldn’t use it directly after brushing as you rinse away the fluoride from your toothpaste. It’s best to use a mouthwash in between brushing instead.

Bad Habits

If you’re a smoker – stop. Smoking and good teeth do not go hand in hand. Not only is it good for your health, it will also help to cut any chances of tooth loss, tooth staining, gum disease… and in more severe cases mouth cancer! Stopping smoking can dramatically cut the need for denture implants as you get older.

If you have a sweet tooth, try to choose sugar-free sweets and drinks which contain xylitol as it can actively contribute to your oral health. If you can’t resist, chew sugar-free gum after eating or drinking sugary foods, to help protect your teeth and gums in between meals.
