SPF Decoded and why do we need them

What is SPF (sun protection factor) and why is it important in our every day beauty regime. Find out more as Guest Blogger Jeremy tell us all here.

There’s so much about sunscreen that still feels like a mystery. We know it’s important, but more often than not, we ignore the basic statutes; we forget to apply it daily, we unknowingly buy the wrong type or choose a brand loaded with nasty chemicals (that may be worse for us than the sun exposure it’s supposed to protect from). For all of my good intentions and focus on health, I’ve been known to use expired brands or drugstore brands while drinking my organic green juice.

In an attempt to demystify SPF, it’s important to first answer one of the most common questions regarding sunscreen: What is broad spectrum, and why do we need it?

Think of broad spectrum as the Netflix to your parent’s basic cable. It’s a health and beauty essential that offers complete protection from both UVA and UVB rays. We don’t want to mess with these guys; UVA rays can cause early aging with side effects like wrinkles and sunspots. UVB rays can burn your skin. Exposure to both types can cause skin cancer.

Sun protection should be approached with the same diligence that we approach any wellness activity. Everyone has been guilty of only applying sunscreen once at the beach and then being surprised when the sunburn appears that night. Awareness of the damage that the sun’s rays can cause hopefully makes everyone more careful about daily application and re-application.

SPF benefits to our skin

We should put sunscreen in the same category as other essential beauty products that we get excited to buy. Not all sunscreens are created equal. According to the American Academy for Dermatology, the minimum SPF that you need for daily wear is SPF 30, for outdoor activities it bumps up to SPF 50.

Long gone are the days of slathering our bodies with baby oil in the beating sun, while we waited for the Sun-In to bleach our hair. These days it’s time to get serious about real non-toxic sunscreen that you can feel safe wearing every day (cloudy days, I’m looking at you too).

The best protection against the sun is a product that is safe for everyday use and provides added benefits. A great natural option is Green Screen. This lightweight, non-greasy, daily environmental protector offers broad-spectrum coverage and boasts an SPF of 30. It also features a patent-protected formula that contains a natural anti-oxidant and promotes even skin tone.

Luckily, sun protection has come a long way in the fashion world as well. Statement pieces, like sun hats, now come in a variety of different SPF-protective fabrics. Check out this classic style from Mott 50, which provides protection of UPF50.

SPF-protective fabric is not only used for hats but also in all kinds of swimsuit styles, rash guards, and even dresses and other clothing items. These days, when facing the sun, we have lots of options to keep safe and comfortable without sacrificing style.

When it comes to sun protection, it’s important to consider the delicate eye area as well. Rocking a cool pair of shades makes you look weekend ready while protecting the eyes from harmful rays that can cause squinting and even worse, pesky fine lines and crows feet.

Wearing sunglasses without UV protection is like going to the beach wearing moisturizer instead of sunscreen, so be sure to double check the level of coverage when shopping for shades. Look for ones that are labeled “UV 400” or 100% UV protection. This means they block all light rays with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers. (This includes UVA and UVB rays.)

These days, you don’t have to sacrifice style for health. A wide range of brands and price points come complete with UV 400 protection/100% protection. Whether you are in a classic mood, or a more modern mood, you can certainly find the right style with the right amount of protection.

Also, don’t forget kids’ protection. Children need protective sunglasses as well since their skin can be particularly sensitive to the rays of the sun.

So, the next time you enroll in a yoga class, order from a local CSA, or embark on any other health and wellness pursuit, remember that sun protection is just as essential to maintaining your health and improving longevity
